People with Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

Objectives:

  • To encourage early consultation and early treatment
  • To promote practice of safer sex for preventing HIV / STI

Activities:

  1. Promote condom use among patients with STI through Social Hygiene Clinic support projects, and the messages of safer sex and STI prevention was integrated.
  2. Dissemination of the STD/AIDS Update, a quarterly surveillance report published by the Special Preventive Programme and the Social Hygiene Service of the Department of Health for related services to know the latest situation of STIs and HIV/AIDS.
  3. To assist in training of NGO staffs on HIV and STI knowledge, as well as introduction of related healthcare services in Hong Kong, so as enhance risk reduction counselling to reduce HIV and STI risk among high-risk clients.
  4. Provision of condom & lubricants through other nongovernmental organisations to support safer sex promotion undertaken by community groups.
  5. Distribution of health education materials and souvenir on prevention of STIs/AIDS to promote safer sex and Social Hygiene Service. Encourage anyone suspect of having STI to seek medical check-up and treatment.

Social Hygiene Service

The Social Hygiene Service of Department of Health is responsible for the prevention and control of sexually transmitted infections (STI).

In the control of STI, social hygiene clinics accept walk-in clients and provide medical treatment and counselling service, thus ensuring a high degree of accessibility. Staff of the Anti-Venereal Disease Office carries out contact tracing, health education and outreach activities to control the spread of STI.

The most common diseases were non-specific genital infection/ non-gonococcal urethritis, genital warts, gonorrhoea, herpes genitals and syphilis.
